Chapter 18

Hattie rushed into one of the bunk rooms, slamming the door behind her. The room had been empty of children for a week now, so it was a private place to sit and cry. And fume.

How could he not understand?

Their mission was always the Hell pincher. Jeopardizing their Bright Soul could lead to the enslavement of humanity. Vincent knew this. And now they had a practitioner from the Levant who was willing to help capture and eliminate the Hell pincher. How could he not see how important this was?

It hadn’t been just that. The way he turned away from her, like he’d dismissed her. As if he could just shut off the conversation and walk away.

And she’d let him do it, when she should have insisted he stay and air out their argument. She hadn’t, and he’d left, and now there was this anger between them.

Hattie slumped onto one of the bunks as tears streamed from her eyes. The way he left…hurt. She didn’t want him to leave. She wanted him to tell her about the Bianco fight. It was just…she had to get Ghasawi to the codex first. Was that so difficult to understand? Couldn’t he wait a bloody minute so that she could take care of business, and then share the moment with him?

She thought about his face when she’d arrived. He’d been positively beaming. Hattie hadn’t seen that sort of energy in his face…ever. It made him look young and carefree. Vincent always carried that storm cloud with him wherever he went. It added to his mystique most times, but lately Hattie was haunted by her own thunderheads. She could use a ray of sunlight. And here she was, dousing it with her obsession with the Hell pincher.

Maybe he was he right.

The door opened. Hattie wiped her face and looked up to find Sadie looming in the doorway.

“Go away,” Hattie choked out.

“Okay,” Sadie said as she stepped into the room and took a seat on the bunk across from Hattie.

Hattie took several breaths, trying to collect herself. “I just need a minute.”

Sadie nodded. “Okay.”

“Will you say something other than ‘okay’?”

“You should dump that bum.”

Hattie blinked at Sadie. “What, now?”

“He’s no good for you. There. I said my peace.”

Sadie stood up and moved for the door.

Hattie stood up as well. “Hang back a second. What are you doing?”

“I’m trying to help.”

“Right. I’m a mess, and you choose this moment to come in here and tell me to give Vincent the shove off? What kind of friend are you?”

“The pragmatic kind of friend.” Sadie regarded her a moment. “Listen, I don’t know what you see in him. Yeah he’s good-looking, charming, a snappy dresser, but he’s caused you nothing but trouble and heartache.”

“That’s not true.” Hattie reached for a blanket and mopped her face with a sniffle. “I’ve caused him more trouble and heartache then he’s caused me. And he’s not a bum.”

“That so? Tell me how he’s helped you at all?”

“He saved me from the mob, for a start.
